15 ways you’re letting fear get in the way of growth

As a business owner, you want to succeed. You want your business to be a financial success, and for that to happen, you have to grow and adapt too. But it can be incredibly disheartening when that isn’t happening as fast as you want it to. Or worse still, you feel completely stuck — especially if you’re letting your own fears get in the way of growth.

So how can you tell if your plans and goals are the issue or if your fears are getting in your way?

Here are 15 ways you can spot if you’re letting your fears limit your personal and business growth levels.

#1: Setting yourself impossible to reach targets

If you’re setting impossible targets, you’re going to get demotivated. You’re also giving yourself an excuse not to try other things — as failure to reach these goals often leads to self-criticism and negativity.

Check out How to plan and create goals (and stick to them) for advice on setting better goals for yourself.

#2: Ignoring your intuition gets in the way of growth

Intuition is an essential aspect of your business success. But if you’re ignoring those gut feelings or not connecting in with your intuition, you’re missing out on this inbuilt guidance system. You need to learn how to turn down the fears so you can start noticing those guiding nudges.

#3: Doing the same thing and expecting different results

It’s insane to repeat the same thing over and over, hoping to achieve a different result. But if you’re stuck with fear, it’s an easy mistake to make. It also helps you avoid anything new — perfect if you’re looking to stay stuck.

#4: Keeping yourself small

You’re an integral part of your business growth. If you’re setting low expectations for yourself, you’re also limiting how successful your business will be. To overcome this, ensure you’re factoring in personal development into your business goals for the year ahead.

#5: You avoid making decisions that lead to growth

This can show up in various ways — limiting investment, ignoring team growth, and preventing the implementation of better systems and automation. Don’t let fear get in the way of growth here; decide to invest in your business.

#6: Procrastination and inactivity

Procrastination is an excellent way of protecting yourself from failure. And it can come in many forms, from total inactivity to filling your time with pointless or unimportant tasks. Notice where you’re falling into procrastination and investigate what it is that you’re really fearful of doing.

#7: Picking holes in your plans

Are you busy creating plans but then picking holes in them? It’s a great way to avoid commitment and potential disappointment — but it’s not a good way to achieve business growth!

This particularly shows up when it comes to being visible and marketing your business, so check out 7 steps to an aligned marketing strategy for 2022 for help here.

#8: Doing it all yourself gets in the way of growth

Want to be in control and feel like others won’t get you the results you want (whilst also secretly fearing they might!)? This is a classic way of overworking yourself and limiting growth.

#9: Not tracking your progress and results

It’s not always good news when you check your progress, stats and general results. But hiding from the facts isn’t going to help you grow. Take a deep breath and dive into them because they’re the best way to move you and your business forward.

#10: Not investigating why you’re feeling restricted and restrained

If you’re not sure why you’re feeling this way, it’s time to stop and take notice. This is one of the ways your body language is telling you something’s off — and if you want to grow, you need to take a step back so you can investigate those feelings further.

#11: Ignoring the signs in your body

Ailments and illnesses are another way of your body showing signs something’s off. We all get sick at one time or another, but if you’re repeating ailments or consistently having one problem after another, it could be a sign that you’re overworking yourself, burning yourself out or manifesting things to hold you back.

#12: Being triggered by the success of others

If the success of others triggers you, that’s a sign you’d like to experience some of what they’re having. It can also lead to self-criticism too — they’re incredible, and you’re not, they have more significant resources etc. — and that can get in the way of growth.

#13: You’re letting your excuses get in the way of growth

Are you great at coming up with excuses and the perfect reason why you can’t do something? The economy, your lack of resources, a lack of support, limited financial resources, not experienced enough, too old or too young — stop letting these excuses get in your way!

#14: You can’t move on from your mistakes

If failure floors you and you take each one as a sign to stop rather than to adapt and move on, you’re limiting your growth. Mistakes and failures often have valuable learnings at their core, so learn how to use that to your advantage and help you move on from your mistakes.

#15: You’re letting a lack of motivation get in the way of growth

Motivation isn’t something you automatically have; it naturally ebbs and flows over time. Low motivation doesn’t automatically mean you’re not ready to get started — it can simply be a case of you needing to get started to become more motivated.

If you’re using any of the above ways to let fear get in the way of growth, learn from that. Make a plan of action and commit to it. Forgive yourself and move on. It’s not about beating yourself up over your behaviour. If you want to move forward, you need to start seeing it as a way to step up as a business owner and make the changes you need to make to grow. And ultimately, it’s about permitting yourself to achieve the levels of success you and your business deserve.
